Milton Hershey – The Man Who Created Milk Chocolate
After a number of failed attempts Hershey founded the Hershey Chocolate Company. He then used his wealth to build a town around his factory. He called the new town Hershey, Pennsylvania.
Unlike most industrialists of his time Hershey was concerned about philanthropy and built a model company town with comfortable homes, an inexpensive public transportation system and quality schools. He also provided many recreational opportunities.
Henry Hershey
Despite the fact that he had little formal education, Milton Hershey became the founder of a world-renowned chocolate company. He also built a town for his workers and established a profitable factory in Hershey, Pennsylvania. Hershey began with nothing, and worked tirelessly to build his legacy. He died in 1945.
Hershey’s mother, Fanny, instilled a strong work ethic into her son. He was expected to help out on the family farm and learn the skills of rural life. However, the Hershey family moved around a lot and he never had much opportunity to continue his education beyond the fourth grade.
At the age of 14, Hershey dropped out of school and went into business for himself. He apprenticed with a newspaper printer, but found the work to be dull and uninspiring. He then turned his attention to confectionery, and for a few years he tried to sell cough drops and candy cabinets that he had made himself. His first shop was on Spring Garden Street in Philadelphia, and sales were lukewarm at best.
Determined to make his venture a success, Hershey borrowed money from the Snavely uncles and Aunt Mattie. He then moved to Denver and completed an apprenticeship with a confectioner specializing in caramels. His newfound knowledge allowed him to produce a superior product that consumers raved about.
Hershey then opened a second store in New York City. This time, his business was a success, but after a few years he realized that he wanted to focus on candy making. Rather than return to his original location, Hershey decided to take advantage of the plentiful milk and fertile soil in Pennsylvania.
Hershey spent the next two decades building a factory and creating a successful town. He used his profits to improve the lives of the people in Hershey. In addition to providing jobs and housing, Hershey also gave the town free public amenities, including parks and a library. Hershey also provided education and vocational training to the local youth. Today, Hershey’s continues to use innovative technology and production methods to keep up with consumer demand for high-quality chocolate.
Caramels
The demand for McCrea’s caramels has increased over the years, but they still make their treats in small batches. They use a computer-driven batch cooker that can regulate the temperature to within a tenth of a degree and stir the caramels, which ensures even heating and consistent results. They also have a large inventory of candy molds.
McCrea’s business model is unique in that she is able to focus on making the product while her husband manages the marketing, sales and customer service side of the company. She says it’s important to have a balance between the creative and the business side of a business. It’s not enough to just be able to make a good product; you also have to know how to market and sell it.
Hershey’s first attempt at the candy business was a failure, and he moved to Denver hoping to find a better location for his next venture. He soon realized he didn’t have the money or resources to succeed in the West, so he moved back to Pennsylvania. The area was rich in dairy farms, so he decided to experiment with all sorts of different candy products.
At the time, Hershey’s was a successful caramel producer with a good reputation for quality. However, he had always dreamed of producing chocolate. With the revenue from the sale of his caramel business, he decided to invest in a new factory that would mass-produce milk chocolate.
The Hershey factory was built near Hershey’s hometown of Derry Church in central Pennsylvania. The town was an ideal spot for the plant because it had a good supply of clean water and access to some of the best dairy farms in the country. Hershey also wanted to build a model community for his workers, so he created schools, churches, and parks.
Hershey also donated vast amounts of his personal wealth to charitable causes. He focused a great deal of his philanthropy on endeavors that benefited children, including building the Hershey Industrial School. This school has since become the Milton Hershey School. The Hershey Trust continues to donate funds to the school today.

Chocolates
Milton Hershey was an American businessman who built one of the world’s best-known chocolate brands. He made milk chocolate a treat all Americans could afford and in the process cooked up a massive fortune. His persistence paid off and he used his wealth to improve the town where his company was located. He also founded an orphanage that would take poor boys, give them a good home and sturdy lessons in character, and then teach them to make their way in the world.
Hershey was raised by his mother, a strict Fanny who taught him the value of hard work and an emphasis on education. When he was nineteen he borrowed money from his family to start his first candy company. He was convinced that people would travel to Philadelphia for the Centennial Exposition and he wanted to cash in on this opportunity. This venture as well as a later chocolate company Hershey owned in New York City failed. Milton didn’t give up and instead he decided to move back to the farm hills where he was raised. He set up a dairy farm where he was able to get huge supplies of fresh milk for his caramels.
He re-established the Lancaster Caramel Company and started shipping his products across the US and Europe. However, he wanted to expand his offerings and he went to the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893. This is where he saw really advanced machinery that could be used to make chocolate.
This was the turning point for Hershey’s company. He realized that he needed to change his focus and concentrate on making chocolate. From this point forward Hershey’s chocolate was a hit. In fact, Hershey’s Chocolate became a household name and was sold in grocery stores nationwide.
The Hershey’s brand has been the number one selling chocolate in America for over fifty years. The Hershey’s product line includes a variety of other items such as cookies, syrup, and candy bars. Hershey’s is based in Hershey, Pennsylvania and is the largest manufacturer of confectionery in the world.
Hershey’s Town
As Hershey’s business began to grow, he began to create facilities and townships to support his workers. The community he built became known as Hershey’s Town and provided services such as parks, schools, libraries, churches, and a zoo. Hershey also helped his employees find housing within the township. Hershey exhibited a unique form of industrial paternalism and cared deeply about the welfare of his workers.
Hershey’s Town was a model for other company towns, including those built by industrialists such as Thomas Edison. Hershey firmly believed that his company had an obligation to society, and he sought ways to show this responsibility. He also had a strong desire to improve his own home, and he filled his mansion with exotic birds, plants, and memorabilia from his travels. He also spent large sums of money on his landscape and garden.
Hershey worked incredibly hard to build his chocolate business. He started out selling taffies from a pushcart in Philadelphia, then worked 16 hours a day at his candy factory to keep his business going. His efforts paid off, and Hershey’s first venture grew into the Hershey Company. He eventually expanded the operation to produce a wide variety of different products, including chocolate bars.
During World War II, Hershey innovated and experimented with various forms of candy production to meet the demand for soldiers fighting in the war. For example, Hershey’s Field Ration D Bar was an important source of energy for the soldiers. Hershey continued to expand his operations, and the Hershey’s brand name became one of the most recognized in the world.
Although Hershey’s Town embodied many American ideals and benefits for his workers, it was not without its drawbacks. Hershey’s Town was an effective tool for attracting skilled labor, but it allowed him to control wages and worker morale. Although Hershey’s kindness and generosity were genuine, his actions often served his own interests. Ultimately, Hershey’s Town was his means of controlling his workforce and maintaining power over the township. He had a firm belief that his workers owed him everything, and he used this power to his advantage.
